Age: The writing is at about the level of a teenage girl, but the content is adult

Bella Swan traps herself in a boring small town with her quiet father after her mother remarries. There she meets Edward Cullen and his bizarre, but hynpotizingly beautiful family. Upon learning that the Cullens are vampires, Bella, having become obsessed romantically with Edward, is thrown into their strange and frightening world.

Sexuality: 9

The most lustfully sexual book without an actual sex scene, it is the critic's viewpoint that this book is to a teenage girl what pornography would be to a man. The following massive amounts of physical touch, sexual innuendo, and references to Bella and Edward's romantic relationship should make the point.

Christian Principles: None

Bella is an entirely self-involved, lustful, and sexually passionate teenager who is left a rather drab personality so that every girl can put themselves in her place. Bella lives a depressed and lonely life where she gives to no one but herself, does not seek out relationships that are edifying (like one with her father), but pursues something she knows is wrong. (For instance, the apple of "temptation," representing the Garden of Eden, is the cover art.) Bella lies to her father at every given opportunity, assuming he would be of no help to her, would not understand her, would stop her from doing what she wants to do, etc. There is no trust in her parents, no respect to authority, and no accountability whatsoever.

Bella and Edward are continually placed in situations where they are alone, including sleeping together and actively participating in a whole host of physical affection without actual sex, although Bella asks Edward for that as well. Regardless of the fact that the boyfriend of her choice is a murderer and immortal blood-drinker who wants to kill her most of all, Bella disregards all common sense and gives herself over to her lusts, going so far as to be depressed beyond living at the thought of losing him. She is obsessed beyond what is natural in a very short amount of time, making the reader assume other powers are at play here. Edward, the vampire, even says he has "charms" and attractiveness to draw her in. It is actually said that she is "drunk, intoxicated with his very presence." He knows he is dangerous to her, but he mentions that he'd rather just "go to hell" and have fun doing it.

When has love been defined as "a mutual fulfilling of each other's lusts"? Have they read the Biblical definition of it being "long-suffering" and "seeking not its own" (1 Corinthians 13)? If Bella and Edward knew they were such a bad idea for each other, then continuing to further their relationship makes their claims of "love" a lie. Do not be fooled - lust is not love just because it happens to be a mutual desire between two people. Never is selfishness a virtue. Just because Bella and Edward's hormonal desires happen to be one and the same, does not make what they are doing not extremely detrimental to each other.

This book teaches your daughter, in absolutely no subtle terms, that she can lie and deceive to get what she wants in a boy at any age and at any cost. This book teachers your daughter that she is far smarter than you and knows what she can handle and what is best for her. This book also teaches your daughter that she can touch a boy all over, kiss him passionately, allow him in her bed at night, and have hours of alone time with him and he will never be fully tempted to take advantage of her. One of the adult vampires tells Bella that her relationship will work out because it's what Edward wants, making it seem like a teenager, in their finite thoughts and limited view of the world, only needs to want deeply enough to make all wrongs become right. This book also teaches your daughter that she is not complete within herself without a relationship. It says nothing about being complete in God alone.

No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us." 1 John 4:11 (Emphasis mine)

This book also has an entirely false view of men and their thoughts, feelings, desires, and temptations. The critic's husband read some of it and was burdened by the thought that a girl would be led to believe a man would not be tempted by her throwing her body at him and begging him to have sex with her. Both the critic and her husband were very disturbed with the illusions of a false reality that does not exist.

Then there is the subject of vampires themselves. Instead of the world of Twilight being a fantasyland where a creature that sucked blood might be a normality, Stephenie Meyer, the author, places Edward and his "family" directly into our world and does not leave it there. She brings occultist spirituality in to explain him as well.

The book begins by describing Edward's good looks as "god-like" and ends with outright calling him a "god" and an "angel." Bella says that the only heaven she ever wants to be in is one where Edward is her Light and Guiding Angel, an outright rejection of Jesus Christ and true heaven. And isn't satan described as an angel of light?

"For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds. 2 Corinthians 11:13-15

It is obvious that Bella worships Edward and vampires, even though their very being and desires and way of living is against God's design and decrees.

Leviticus 17:10-11 says, "If any one of the house of Israel or of the strangers who sojourn among them eats any blood, I will set my face against that person who eats blood and will cut him off from among his people. For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life."

Jesus Christ shed His blood, which is said to be cleansing, on the cross for our sins. God holds blood in high esteem, even in animals.

Genesis 9:4 says, "But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man. Whoever sheds man's blood, By man his blood shall be shed, For in the image of God He made man."

Edward knows, without a doubt, that he is going to hell. He makes mention of this - and an entire discussion of this, and his lack of a soul, is included in the sequel to Twilight, New Moon. Edward is referred to as a god, an angel, and inside his own personal hell on earth. He loses control when he "hunts" where he drinks blood from animals. He describes Bella's scent tempting him like an alcoholic or a heroin addict. He does not kill and eat her, but he continues to give in to his addiction by obsessively clinging to their relationship. Edward claims to abstain from humans, suddenly trying to convince the readers that he is the good guy here. Although, when he talks about a "rebellious" period where he hunted evildoers and "protected innocents," making Edward out to be his own personal god that subscribes judgment to whomever he deems worthy, Bella says this is all very understandable. Edward is held accountable to no one and has more power than he should to accomplish his goals.

There is an entire story about an Anglican minister who set out to hunt down and eliminate vampires in the name of the church, God, and the people of his village. He is portrayed as bloodthirsty and ruthless. However, in his situation, with a family to protect and God's Word to defend, would we not do the same? But Stephenie Meyer cannot hide her bias. When his son is bitten and "changed," he turns against his own son. It is also said he persecuted Catholics and other religions, painting this Anglican man as a fiend and a cruel father. This is the only reference to church or to pastors in this whole book, seeming to leave one with a bad taste in their mouth toward Christianity. Scripture is also continually used out of context, whether it is Genesis 2:7 mentioning the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (paralleling Bella and Edward's relationship. Although, right in the face of God and His Word, the two of them do not face consequences or suffer for allegorically eating the fruit of said tree), or whether it is the reference to the lion lying down with the lamb (Edward claims to be "the lion," who fell in love with "the lamb." Regardless of the fact that this passage is not an analogy, but a reference to the peace of the Millennial kingdom, once again Edward has been compared to satan himself.

"Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." 1 Peter 5:8

But Bella cannot be sober-minded and watchful. She was compared to a drunk previously, remember?), or whether it is the fact that Jacob and the native Americans describe the flood in a way that goes against Scripture. They say that Noah and his family were not the only survivors, but that their Indian ancestors simply floated on trees. It is also said that these same humans are descended from wolves. The future is said to not be set in stone, which disregards the fact that a Sovereign God is in control. It is discussed that Edward thinks we bring our "strongest human traits" into the afterlife with us. Does he not know that,

"The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the treacherous are taken captive by their lust." (Proverbs 11:6) and "When a wicked man dies, his hope perishes; all he expected from his power comes to nothing." (Proverbs 11:7 NIV)?

Or is this actually a reference to Edward already being "from the afterlife" with god-like powers? It would seem, in context, to be the latter. It is discussed whether vampires just evolved into greater human beings, but Edward doesn't think so. He thinks that the "same delicate force" that created the world created vampires. It is true that God created the demons and the devil, but they will have their demise.

"And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever." Revelation 20:10

Edward knows this. Remember, he is sure he has no soul and is going to hell. Still, it does not hinder him from being his own immortal demigod on earth. There are too many references that belong to our sovereign God alone that are given to Edward and his family of vampires. One is described as the "Incarnation of Beauty" as well as Edward is said to be Bella's Savior, titles that should be used for Jesus Christ alone. And what did Edward save Bella from? Safety? Protection? Peace? Growth? Maturity? Honesty? Her parents? What "Angel of Light" in Scripture brings danger, distress, bloodshed, violence, immaturity, deceit, and a tearing apart of families?

"Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such 'wisdom' does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness. What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures... Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." James 3:13-4:3,7

"You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord? Acts 13:10
